According to Axios, Alec’s arrival makes JD the first sitting U.S. vice president in modern history to welcome a child while in office. The last known vice president to do so was Schuyler Colfax, who served under President Ulysses S. Grant and welcomed his son, Schuyler Colfax III, in April 1870.
Usha Vance’s Public Appearances Also Drew Scrutiny
The birth announcement was not the only recent moment involving the family to generate discussion online. Photos taken during a March 17 event at the Naval Observatory also drew attention.
The images showed Usha, dressed in a green pleated dress beneath a navy blazer, greeting Irish Taoiseach Micheál Martin and his wife, Mary O’Shea, during the Irish leader’s St. Patrick’s Day visit to Washington, D.C., before attending a breakfast with the visitors.

Welcoming a fourth child also comes as the Vances prepare for another major transition beyond expanding their family.
According to CNN, Usha and the couple’s children have begun spending more time at a rental residence on historic Wolver Hill Farm, a nearly 500-acre property outside Middleburg, Virginia. The rural property is expected to provide the family with greater privacy away from the constant attention that comes with living in Washington, D.C.

The property is owned by a firm led by Charles Kuhn. Although JD is expected to stay there periodically, the family’s official residence remains the vice president’s residence at the Naval Observatory.
People familiar with the arrangement told the media outlet that the move is intended to give Usha and the children a greater sense of normalcy while shielding them from the intense public attention that comes with life in Washington.

“There’s some differences obviously. I have to dress up a lot more,” she said with a laugh. “My last pregnancy there were a lot of sweatpants.”

She laughed at the question before replying, “I’m laughing because it would be really hard for me to be blonde.” She added, “That color would look totally absurd.”

Usha was born and raised in San Diego, California, to Indian immigrant parents who had moved to the United States shortly before her birth. Her father worked as a medical engineer and lectured at San Diego State University. Her mother was employed as a molecular biologist.
She graduated from Mt. Carmel High School in 2003. A senior yearbook photo showed her wearing a plain black top with minimal makeup, reflecting a simple, understated style. Former classmates described her as a “bookworm” and a “leader.” After high school, Usha enrolled at Yale University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in history in 2007.
